The out going drive

Well, today I swapped out the disk drive in the little computer. The drive is not supposed to be a "user" replaceable item. And, the little computer does not have an optical drive. Hopefully the computer will be good to go for another year. Maybe by then Apple will have come out with a tiny computer.

The computer is now running XP SP2 - but no other "patches". Avast for antivirus. It is a low impact A/V and is free. http://www.avast.com/

I put Opera on to use as a browser. Because, I think is less of a resource hog than Firefox. http://www.opera.com/

Next - I loaded up Launchy. Launchy has a cult following... Basically, it starts programs. For example ALT SPACE O starts Opera. http://launchy.net/ - it is free of course.

Another resource hog is Acrobat Reader. But, you gotta have a PDF reader. So, I removed Acrobat Reader and installed - well - I haven't played with it enough to recommend it yet. But, there are better things that Acrobat Reader. Especially for a very underpowered elderly computer.
