Surf’s Up

Body Boarders
Surf's up at Honl's

We had surf again today. Lots of surf for our surf deprived island. Where I thought that the surfers would be today was outside my walking limit. But, the body boarders were out in force about one mile down the road from our hotel. Well within my walking range.

Every now and again something comes along that is too good to be free. Readability is one of those things. It is a little javascript bookmarklet that converts what you are trying to read into something you actually can read. It works great with Safari and Firefox.

If you read stuff online  – check it out. http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/

Readability is especially nice for those of us with “mature” eyes.

Dinner (which due to Carlton’s work schedule is at 3:15) was meatballs, broccoli, and rice. Sandwiches on tap for later this evening.

making myself @ home

I seem to be making myself at home – not in Kona – but in the new computer.

Reference the junky desktop. I try to keep it nice and clean. I would love to have a zen-like desk top (and a zen-like apartment) but it isn’t going to happen.

I am starting to think-Mac more often. The Mac OS is not perfect. But it is stable. I find that more often than not Safari is my browser of choice. Not a preference – I prefer Firefox, but Safari is quicker. Quicker is better.

Did my part to help the Chinese economy. I bought a wetsuit. That which is called a “Shorty Spring Suit” in surfing circles. But, it might be a few days before I give it a test. Big surf is supposed to be coming in – and big surf is not good for snorkeling.

Speaking of big surf – it might be big enough to “run the Eddie”. The Eddie Aikau is a big surf contest that is only run  seven times since 1985, because 30 foot waves are required.  The most recent contest  was in December 2004, when waves reached 30 to 50 feet. The contest only invites 24 big-wave riders and no jet ski tow in allowed. The Eddie – Check it out. The Eddie is not held on our island – but we follow it on TV. If it happens.

getting ready to get ready

I am getting ready to get ready to go to Hawai’i.

Downloaded some old radio shows for Mr C to listen to on the planes to Kona. Assuming that I can teach him how to run one of the iPods. We have 3 plane rides – and we are not setting together.

The Internet Archive is a mother lode free old “stuff” to download. So, I snagged some old Gunsmoke, Green Hornet and Johnny Dangerous for his listening pleasure.

For some quality time killing – The Internet Archieve – Movies, commercials, WW2 propaganda – from both sides, old tv shows, print stuff, vintage web sites… Check it out.

Once again I am seeking The Grail, ie, all my digital images culled, sorted and cataloged. To that end, I am copying all my still un-processed images to the “spare” 500 gig usb drive. Off it will go to Hawaii with me. You know the rest… In my copious spare time – I’ll get culling, sorting and cataloging. And when I get back to Arlington – everything will be done. When pigs fly!

And, I forgot to wish the internet a very happy 40th birthday yesterday. And here is a fine “history of the internet slideshow from across the pond”

This I do not need…

how compulsive can you get?
how compulsive can you get?

$6.85 + shipping for 10 servings of toilet paper. What ever happened to taking about 1/3 of a roll from home and jumping on it to flatten? And, boys and girls – if you are in a place where you need to byo-tp – you are going to need a boatload more than 10 servings.

I really wanted to play with the Mac version of PrintScreen. I think it was cmd+shift+4.

Another thing I don’t need. DeathSwitch. Check it out. I do worry a little bit about what would happen it I get hit by a bus (A possibility for urban persons).  Someone will have to get everything converted back to snail mail bills and checks for Mr C.
