Day 4

20140122-142021.jpg
Coming rains … I did not get back to the hotel in time!

We were promised wind, rain and big choppy waves. So far, we have had rain.

I got completely and thoroughly soaked during my 5 mile walk today, but I am not complaining that is way better than the 10° we had back home today.

So far so good with Carlton’s health. I have declared him back to normal (for now). I can even get crabby with him especially when I find him without his shirt on.

I find that the voice dictation system in the iPad works really well, easier than typing on the tiny little keyboard.

Cloudy and “Cold” Here Today

A little drinking village with a fishing problem.

It has been cloudy and “cold” all day. There is about 10 inches of snow up on the mountain tops. When the “land” breeze kicks in – it comes over the snow – causing instant chill. Especially when there is no sun.

Since I am staying out of the water until my nose gets completely healed – I have tried to kick my walking up to 5 miles a day. Frankly, that much walking is rather boring. Thank goodness for iPods.

Fat Tuesday here. Every one pigs out on malasadas. Fat Tuesday is called Malasada Day in Hawaii.  A malasada is sort of like a doughnut without the hole. They were introduced in Hawai`i by Portugese plantation workers and are best eaten right out of the grease.

I am no longer amused by Rick Santorum.

Parking Lot Tree

Parking Lot Tree

New outlook continues. Had a completely fine day without swimming and without any nosebleeds. Walking, reading, lounging, photography. (Beer and Coffee too).

Farm Market.

Scraps and Wrap Up

Kumu and the little girls, a cookbook scrap.

Trying to get all the cookbook scraps rounded up. Rounded up and moved off the Airness.

Three weeks from today we will be enroute home. Actually we will be hanging out in the Honolulu Airport.

Ah, the Republican Follies continue. The Red Meat Republicans just don’t like Mr Romney. I don’t see what they see in Old Sweater Vest Santorum. I guess they see “Not Romney”.

Plans Finalized

Twenty hour trek home has been planned. Tickets have been purchased. Nothing much more to do until it comes time to pack up some flat rate boxes for the USPS. It would cost $57 to check a bag home. That is 3 big and 1 medium box. I am not a pack animal.

I am never going to be Netjet rich. I guess I am first class rich. But, I got first class rich by being too cheap to go first class. You can not frugal  your way into a Netjet. At least not a Netjet that will make it to Hawaii. West Coast the Hawaii is a serious long no refueling haul.

The “Kitchen”

The Kitchen...

Four months out of twelve – this is my kitchen.

This might not be much of a kitchen, but my wet suit is getting more than a little snug and I refuse to buy a bigger one. Maybe it shrunk. Yeah, right.

Still Cookbooking

Keeping Kona Country

Well, I guess that the sheep shearing class was a success. Yesterday’s paper reported on a gentleman who was accused of beating another distinguished citizen of our village with a cow bone. I don’t think the folk who have “keep kona country” stickers on their trucks have anything to worry about.

I am still completely buried by the cookbook project. I don’t want to think about how much more must be done.

A Fine Day

Kailua Pier

A fine day in exciting downtown Kailua Kona. High School canoe races today. I swam out to the start/finish line. Took some pictures on land and at sea. The pictures are still in the camera. I only open the camera up in well air conditioned quarters. Our room is not well air conditioned.

The hunter-gatherer is awash in bananas and avocados. Not a real big problem. There is still room in the fridge for beer.

Still liking the Kindle. Got bored during the football game and checked out a trashy Kindle format novel from the Arlington Library. In 5 minutes I was reading away.

Turtle Time

Turtle Time

Is there anything more boring than being in a tiny hotel room with a man who is wildly clicking between a bowl game and the Iowa caucus. Can not decide which is the most boring.

Last winter I started working on a cookbook for the Palace – it was put on hold, but has come back to life. There is still lots to do. The cookbook is supposed to have recipes from Tutu (Granny). Take it from me, Tutu used lots of jello and cool whip.

I am working on the cookbook with a woman who agrees with me: 5 ingredients and 30 minutes is about our attention as far as cooking goes.

New Year’s Eve

This cartoon about sums up our New Year’s Eve plans. It will be interesting to see how many fireworks we have. This year Honolulu banned all fireworks – except firecrackers. I am thinking that some folk might have come to our island to enjoy personal pyrotechnics. That is why I have earplugs.

Frankly, I wasn’t all that impressed with 2011. So, I am saying good riddance! Gee in 2012 we can look forward to the election and the end of the world come December 21. Of course, depending on the outcome of the election – the world may end earlier.

Big waves on the way for tomorrow. Haven’t had big waves yet this winter.

Train for 21st Century Jobs in Kona

Learn to Shear Sheep.

What can I add? The economy is really bad.

One of my teeth developed a little problem the other day. Teeth do not spontaneously get better. Thought about doing a DIY dental procedure. Thought better of it.

Will brave a visit to one of the local dentists. But, there are no dentists working this week. Next Wednesday afternoon was the first appointment I could get..
