Almost done…

pictures going up

We are almost moved in. I am still enjoying poor health today. And it was cold and rainy – so, Carlton decided that it was time to start hanging the pictures. He agreed to put the ones that I dislike in “his room”.

Mr Obama is tacked to the wall with museum putty. He sort of goes in the hall with the other members of our rouges’ gallery. But, we might move him to the living room. Framing will be attended to.

While Carlton was hanging pictures – I ordered up a spotting scope.

Then I decided (well, 75% decided) 0n a pair of bookcases and a little tiny writing desk from The Container Store. Anything to avoid going into a “real furniture store” or making a trip to Woodbridge and Ikea.

I fired up the tiny Fujitsu this afternoon. Maybe I can use it for to do Windows.

moving butt shots

wireless - what wireless?

Boxed up the big old cheap slow reliable Dell for moving. I have to ready the TVs and stereo for transport too. Wouldn’t this be “a man job”?

Today, Carlton: went out for breakfast, played tennis, went for a bike ride, watched a little tv and read a book.

I packed, cleaned, washed clothes and changed addresses. It must be good to be a man. At least *my* man.

I broke out the emergency Guiness. And, I’ll say this for Carlton – he rode down to look at our new apartment building and came back with a fine Italian sub for lunch. And, a chocolate muffin. Seems that the apartment building was having a little Earth Day celebration. I am not so sure that one is supposed to celebrate Earth Day by eating. But, what the heck – it was a good sandwich.

one for the vault

if bullshit were electricity, carlton would have been a powerhouse

Something new – this is going into the vault.

But, as for the resume – it doesn’t actually say he ever did anything… I plan to have the last paragraph read at his “Life Celebration”.

Some things shouldn’t be considered too carefully.

  • Things like my 20 some boxes. If I can box all that stuff up weeks before moving – do I really need what is in the boxes?
  • Things like a big ass smelly expensive Lexus being recalled for a “software error”.
  • Things like changing your gas service online and getting “Error occurred while Calling the Java Method” message. That does not instill confidence in the gas company.

boxing

today was about boxing. we are about boxed out. at least i am. too out boxed to use the shift key.

all of my cooking gear – save the cast iron skillets have been boxed. no  flights of culinary excellence for the foreseeable future.

Great Wall of Boxes

The Great Wall of Boxes

Here it is – some of the boxes. Up to 18 boxes and 3 milk crates already. Mr C. even packed a box this morning.

Somewhere along the line – taking the camera out for a little exercise got lost.

Took myself out for a little exercise. Walked down to the Whole Foods Grocery to collect the makings for a nice lunch salad. The new digs is much closer to Whole Foods. And the Apple Store. And, for that matter – Crate and Barrel if I decide to “decorate”.

Might pass on decorating. Well, except for the computer area. The new apartment does not have a computer altar.

I’ll “decorate” when I move to the Little Old Ladies Home. Get walker-friendly furniture. A dresser with lots of room for Depends.

My Hero

My Hero

Carlton is my hero of the day.  He took on Verizon this afternoon. I tried to move our service online. Online Verizon said we must get a new number. Hello, it is 6 blocks away. We don’t even get a new Zip Code, just a new Metro Stop. Since I don’t use the phone – I really don’t care. But, he cares. So, the man waited on hold for “the next available operator”. Seems that you can keep you number if you enter your street as “North Nelson” not “N Nelson”. Only thing is – on line if you enter North Nelson – it is converted to N Nelson. Which is Verizon’s way of doing the address.

Carlton thinks everything is all set up. I wouldn’t count on it. It doesn’t matter, he is now the official family Go To Guy for all things Verizon.

cull pack cull pack cull pack

I got back with the moving program this afternoon. Culled out some of my “luggage” type stuff. If it hasn’t been on a trip in 2 years it is going to Goodwill.

Added some duplicate kitchen items and questionable wardrobe items to the Goodwill box as well.

Moving day is April 28. Carlton didn’t want to get the new place until April 28. And, we have to turn this place back to the owner on April 30. Frankly, I would have liked to get the new place earlier – it is empty – so I could do some preliminary work in the new place. And be sure the utilities are all in place… I am pretty sure the gas and electric will be OK and equally sure that the phone/internet will be problematic.

And, I don’t know if rabbit ears will work there. Yes, boys and girls, we still use rabbit ears. No, I don’t use dial-up. I use DSL – but, I am thinking that Verizon is going to try to push me over to FIOS. I am so not looking forward to dealing with Verizon. WiMax comes to within 1/2 mile of us. I would love to tell Carlton. “If you want phone service – you deal with Verizon.” But 1/2 mile isn’t close enough.

full moving mode 2day

scan it - pitch the paper

Today I did my books. Fitted them into 3 milk crates/end table and a couple of book boxes. When Carlton came home he said “You have books in my room too.” I’d forgotten. Maybe I should have pitched them, without looking at them. But, I just packed another box of books. I did pitch my college diploma. Thank you, Texas Western. But, I don’t need a chunk of paper that says I got out. And, if I did, I could always print one on the computer.

After all that, took to my bed for a little reading – when what should appear but a “home inspector”. He poked in this and that. Said I should have sealed my grout. Its freaking rented grout! Ran the dishwasher. Said our hot water was too hot. Some like it hot, buster! Then he announced that “we” had a freon leak. What’s this we Kimosabe? We be outta here.

But, the guy who is buying the place let me play with his iPad. Sweet. Very Sweet.

moving melt down…

maybe I should get one of these? $130

Having a little moving meltdown. That is to be expected. So, I stopped for a little online window shopping. Since Mr C dissed my decorating skills I have been trying to reconsider some of my decorating choices. I have decided that milk crates – even genuine milk crates – personally stolen from a real dairy – are not suitable end tables when one is closer to 70 than 60.

Can someone tell me why one would need to hire a decorator?  Could a decorator tell my why I need a “Belmont Toilet Tissue Holder” with a 1 year guarantee? Seems to me that every indoor  toilet that I ever had had a nearby wall mounted paper holder.  Some folk have more money than sense.

Took the unloved working computer stuff to the Goodwill and the dead stuff to the recycling place today. And packed 2 more boxes.  Three weeks until moving day – trying to knock out 10 boxes a week. Plus one or two trips to the Goodwill. The Goodwill missions have to take place when Mr C isn’t watching. He doesn’t want to get rid of anything. Ever. Our new apartment is bigger – but has two fewer closets, and  less kitchen cabinet space. So, a little downsizing required.

From the Past

Long ago at USPS - ca 1982

What should arrive in the email box but this picture from way long ago. That is me in the plaid dress and my team of underpaid, overworked, crazy coders. Two guys are missing – one Steve was taking the picture and I don’t know where Dennis was, maybe he was the only person working. It appears to be Dave’s birthday. And, only Len knew how to dress like a real grown up professional.

The apartment seems to be sold. So, no more showing the apartment. But, I had to crank up the moving prep – two boxes today.

Did very little towards the move today. Showed the unit to a couple of people. Made the rounds of the various trash rooms for bubble wrap and boxes.

Got the house all cleaned up and did the grocery thing – so – tomorrow – I am going to the zoo… since the cherry blossoms will BE a zoo.

Happy Trails Ed Roberts – Inventor of the Altair 8800 and all around interesting guy. Check it out: NYT Obit.

Moving into moving mode

Packed one box today. That makes two boxes down and 28 to go.

Carlton went to the new apartment and measured the closets. He did this without being asked.

Tomorrow, Carlton and I, for no apparent reason, are having an “open house” to help sell our unit.

And, something for Easter. You can get all manner of catholic apps for your apple stuff.

The author of this app must have flunked Sister Mary David's English class

You can phone your “Do three rosaries” in. There are also novena apps and stations apps.
