The Meteors. I hope you got up, went out, and looked
up. What a great sight, even in our urban light drenched foggy city.
Fortunately, I got up at 4:15, went out in bathrobe
and fuzzy slippers. Had been out less than 60 seconds when the first
sighting occurred. Soon a second. The night sky had the normal pinkish
glow from the anti-crime street lights. Not long after a third appears.
Carlton comes out. Even he sees a couple. I return to to house for
clothing reinforcements and coffee. Carlton goes back to bed.
I wrap up in a quilt and hide from the street lights.
Meteors continue trickling across the sky in ones and twos. Soon
the fog starts coming in. Not long after 5 am a huge meteor streaks
across - a Steven Spielburg dinosaur killing meteor. And the wonderful
thing was - you could hear neighbors applauding and cheering the
meteor. I wasn't alone in the dark after all. Then the fog stole
the rest of the show - but that was OK. For an instant all was right
with the world.
Let there be light. And meteors. And fireflies.
