Mom - Waiting for surgery to begin - Oct 30, 2002
Another day in medical wonderland. The surgeon, who
held my hands and said "I am sorry, but it was cancer like
we thought - she has less than a year" Today, he said "Oops,
I was wrong, the pathology reports came back on Friday and there
was no cancer." Well, for one thing - he could have said something
on Friday, or Saturday, or Sunday, or even Monday. But, as only
a surgeon can say "Well, it doesn't make any difference does
it: If it were positive - you couldn't do anything about the cancer
and If it were negative - you sure wouldn't do anything." HELLO
SURGEON. There *is* a difference in less than a year and the rest
of your life. Even when you are 82!
Now, we have to get Mom sprung from the hospital and
get her confidence and independence back. Which isn't easy when
you have 22 staples, one drain tube, and one unused feeding tube
attached to the outside of your body.
Funny thing - the chapel in the nursing home at the
old folks home here is the local polling place. So, all manner of
folks are voting - in the chapel, surrounded by the better behaved
dementia patients.
