What is it that I don't understand about college fund raising? Today Carlton got a letter from VA Tech - his college. They want to give him two tickets to a football game. Tickets in the President's Box. I guess this is to induce him to give large amounts of money. "Hi, please come set in our Luxury President's Box and watch barely literate students play games at a time selected for the best scheduling on ESPN. And give us a bunch of money." Wouldn't I be more inclined to donate if they asked me to come an have a coffee with some student who is on need based scholarship? A kid from the backwater mountains of Virginia or from the towns of southern Virginia - towns where all the textile jobs have gone off shore. Wouldn't that be a better showcase for fund raising? I never approved of big time college sports. Still don't
Last night while I wasn't sleeping - because I am an old woman and old women don't sleep too good - while I wasn't sleeping I was web-shopping for new dishes. I have had the same dishes for 30 odd years. Discovered that my old dishes are collectibles or something. Replacements.com is willing to buy some of my stuff for about $300. They are not interested in the bulk of it "at this time". So, I am thinking - I'll sell the stuff they want to buy, and pack the rest away. Then I can sell it later or donate it to the Salvation Army and take a big ole deduction. My original plan was to pack it all down to the Salvation Army in my car tomorrow and declare it was worth maybe $60 max. Time for a new plan!
