Okay boys and girls… Here in the lee of Hualalai, we don’t worry about the lack of swine flu vaccine or the scarcity of mechanical hamsters. We have a serious problem… There may not be any ahi for Christmas/New Years. Ahi is yellowfin tuna. And, it is absolutely required for New Years.
Every year ahi goes from 8-10 bucks per pound in early December to nearly $30 per pound in late December. We’ll see what happens this year. As for me, when I am not eating meatballs – for the next couple of weeks I’ll be eating ahi.
The ahi problem is that by mid-December the fishermen will have taken the yearly quota and will not be allow to catch anymore until January. Sort of gives the tunas a two week holiday.
Today, I am planning to make meatball cheese “burgers”. I have LOTS of meatballs. And, the food fairy has more. I am planning on having meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce for Turkey Day.
