Getting Around Town
Skagway is a town for walking and biking. It is about
22 blocks long and 4 blocks wide. It is flat, very flat. Most park people
walk or bike to work (in the summer - winter might be a different story).
If you drive up, consider bringing your bike.
If you are living in Skagway Town - you can walk everywhere
- but, a bike makes it quicker. (Sometimes the park has a couple old bikes
around that you can use. And, you might be able to buy a new or used bike
in town.)
Many Dyea based employees elect to bring trail bikes
for riding between Skagway and Dyea. The 10-mile winding, narrow dirt
road has proven to be a real thigh-burner for staff wanting to get in
shape, though caution is advised, as the Dyea road is heavily traveled
by buses and recreational vehicles.
If you decide to bring a motor vehicle, you should
be aware that the State of Alaska requires you to register the vehicle.
Contact the Skagway Police Department within ten days of arrival for clarification
of licensing and registration requirements. During the summer of 2001,
the police seem to delight in ticketing folks for "for failure to
obtain Alaska plates within 10 days of employment".
In addition, the police department recommends that
bicycle owners register their bicycles. The Police station is located
at First and State Streets.
