Skagway Alaska
Services

Newspaper - The Skagway News is published biweekly and costs $1.00 per issue.

Radio - We have one AM station from Juneau and one FM NPR station from Haines.

Television - Service is provided by Alaska Rural Communications Systems at no cost. This is a rather eclectic service - it appears that someone somewhere decides what to show on the single channel by selecting from available major network broadcasts.

Cable - Cable service available with fourteen channels for approximately $50 per month. Many residents appear to have satellite dishes.

Internet - The are several local-type ISP's. Neither AOL, MSN, nor ATTWorldNet have local numbers. So, you will want to get a local account. I use APTAlaska because the office is less than a block away from my quarters.

Cell Phone - The Summer of 2001 saw the arrival of cell phone service in Skagway. But, most people still seem to use good old dialup long distance.

Bank - There is one bank in Skagway - it recently became a part of the Wells Fargo system.

Post Office - right next door to the bank and the zip code is 99840. You can get a PO box or have your mail sent to General Delivery 99840. You can not have your mail delivered to the park.

Electricity, Water, Trash - Just like back home, folks.

Library - There is a very nice library. They get a fine assortment of magazines. The book collection is modest, but they are more than happy to get things for you from other libraries. The chairs are comfy and it is a good place to go for some quite time.

Churches - Several Protestant varieties, a Mormon Church, and a Catholic Church.

Schools - Yes, there is a school. Grades K-12, about 140 students. The Department of Education has all the statistics and for a student's view - visit the school's website.
